a wonderful...performance of these 20th-century works

TBA Handouts. Download the lecture notes and handouts for the clinic, "Building Great Clarinetists: Teaching Tips and Literature," that I presented at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention/Clinic in San Antonio on July 27, 2009.

Clarinet On Campus. The book is based on my Ph.D. dissertation at Texas Tech University on the subject of clarinet teaching at colleges and universities in the United States. See below for information on the book's availability.

Michael Dean's Teaching Philosophy. The following document briefly describes some of my key teaching principles.

Joe Allard. Legendary clarinet and saxophone teacher who taught mostly in New York City at schools such as Julliard, Columbia, Manhattan School of Music, etc. His students included Eddie Daniels, Michael Brecker, Paul Cohen, David Liebman, Eric Dolphy, Lee Konitz, and many, many others in the saxophone and clarinet world, both classical and jazz. He also taught my saxophone teacher, Bob Ackerman. The following are links related to Joe Allard and his teaching.

John Wooden. Legendary UCLA basketball coach whose principles transcend sports. His concepts on leadership, performance, motivation, and success are powerful and life-changing. A friend of mine called him "an educational visionary." Below are some Wooden-related web sites, an article I wrote on his ideas, and an annotated bibliography of his books, DVD, and web sites.
